Elsa had previously modeled in Mexico and had won a modeling contest held in Costa Rica but was 'discovered' at the age of 19, after her agency sent some photos to photographer Steven Meisel, who asked her to go to New York. She worked with him for an Italian Vogue cover and story and her career took off from there.
She appeared in the 1999 Pirelli Calendar.
She appeared in the music video 'Love To See You Cry' (2002) by Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias.
She appeared in the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006 Sports Illustrated swimsuit editions.
