Biography:
Katey Sagal Whether you know her for singing, writing, or acting, Katey Sagal has endeared herself to the
American public through her many talents and mediums.Catherine Louise Sagal, known popularly as Katey Sagal,
was born January 19, 1954, in Hollywood, California. Born into the limelight, nearly every member of Sagal's
family was either in front of or behind a camera. Her father was acclaimed director Boris Sagal, while her
mother was producer Sara Zwilling. Her brother is actor Joe Sagal, while her twin sisters, Jean Sagal and Liz
Sagal, made a name for themselves as the Doublemint twins in the 1980s.Sagal and her family resided in the
Mandeville Canyon of Brentwood, Los Angeles. After deciding she wanted to enter the entertainment industry,
Sagal attended the California Institute of the Arts located in Valencia, California.Sagal made her onscreen
debut in 1971, with her father's TV film The Failing of Raymond. Her next role came in 1973 with another of
her father's directorial projects, Columbo: Candidate for Crime, opposite Peter Falk. Her first role away from
familial ties was the 1974 made-for-TV film Larry, with veteran actress Tyne Daly.In addition to acting, Sagal
was actively pursuing her singing career as well. In 1973, she was singing backup for big names such as Bob
Dylan and Gene Simmons, as well as participating in her own band,
The Group With No Name. In 1979, she toured
with Bette Midler as a Harlette.Eventually returning to acting, Sagal worked bit parts until nailing the
audition for the new comedy series titled Married...With Children. With co-stars Ed O Neill, David Faustino,
and Christina Applegate, the show became a smash success. Running for eleven seasons, Sagal earned four Golden
Globe nominations for her portrayal of disenchanted housewife Peggy Bundy. With the eventual end of the show in
1997, Sagal kept busy lending her voice to the animated children's series Recess. She also had a memorable,
albeit brief, appearance on the comedy series That '70s Show, as the mother of Steven Hyde (played by Danny
Masterson). She appeared with all-star cast Mila Kunis, Laura Prepon, Wilmer Valderrama, Debra Jo Rupp,
Kurtwood Smith, Ashton Kutcher, and Topher Grace. While a younger generation may not recognize her by sight,
they probably recognize her by voice. For seventy-two episodes, she voiced the character of Turanga Leela on
the highly popular animated series Futurama.
She is currently in post-production for four pending Futurama
movies. Although details are not finalized, they are slated to air in 2008 on Comedy Central in a
sixteen-episode block.Sagal's career got yet another boost when she was cast to play John Ritter's wife in the
new comedy series 8 Simple Rules...For Dating My Teenage Daughter. The show began in 2002, but with Ritter's
unexpected death in 2003, Sagal was left to carry the show alongside new cast members David Spade and James
Garner. Although generally well received, the show ended in 2005.Notable appearances since the show's end
include Ghost Whisperer, Lost, and Boston Legal. In her personal life, Sagal has been married three times. Her
first marriage was to Freddie Breckmeier from 1977 to 1981, and she married Jack White in 1993. Learning she
was pregnant in 1991, Sagal underwent an emergency cesarean, but tragically, the baby was stillborn. She had
two surviving children with White before divorcing in 2000. She married Kurt Sutter in 2004. They have one
child and are currently still together.
