Swiss hit
Viewed by many as the best young star in Alpine skiing, 18-year-old Lara Gut could contend
for Olympic medals in all five events. She is a mega-talent who is also revered for her maturity,
sportsmanship, openness with media, fan-friendliness and attractive looks.
In a Swiss ski publication, Austrian coach Hans Pum called the double silver
medalist (downhill, super-combined) from the 2009 World Championships "an enrichment for the entire skiing
(community) and a sympathetic feature in addition."

Legal and eager
When Gut turned 18 in April 2009, she wasted no time in taking advantage
of her new legal rights. By the end of May, she had passed her Swiss driver's exam,
been presented with her first car (an AUDI A4 Allroad 2.0 TDI) and cast her ballot in a
nationwide referendum. She admits that she took her first sip of champagne
before she turned 18, but does not see herself indulging in alcoholic
beverages too often, even though she is now of age.

Crash finish, smash finish
St. Moritz, host city of the 1948 Olympics, is the Alpine venue that has provided
Gut with two shining moments in her young career. In February 2008, more than
two months before her 17th birthday, she attained her first World Cup podium with a
third place in the downhill despite losing her balance on the final jump and doing a
snowy spin-o-rama across the finish line. Ten months later, she won her first
World Cup event in the super-G at the same venue. On both occasions, she was all-smiles at the finish line.

Family affair
You will be hard-pressed to find a skiing family that is as close-knit as the
Guts. Lara's father Pauli, a talented regional skier who juggled a teaching job in a
local school of carpentry with training his daughter for many years, took over as
her full-time, personal coach and manager after the 2008-09 season. Her mother Gabriella,
an elementary gym teacher who served as the main income source through
Lara's formative years, is taking a year off to oversee her daughter's cuisine
and recovery programs. Her younger brother Jan is a promising skier, as well.

Language, learning and TV-watching
Gut is a language whiz that can put most polyglots to shame.
Her native language is Italian (her father's native tongue), but she
also speaks French (her mother's native tongue), English, German and Spanish.
She is on pace to finish her high school degree via correspondence in 2010,
with a major in the field of humanities. When she takes a break from the books,
she likes to watch television or listen to music, like any other teenaged girl.
However, she and her family have the unusual habit of watching TV upside-down,
a method suggested by the parents as a way to improve balance and energy flow.
