At the age of 12, Suyane wanted to be an axe music dancer. In Juazeiro do Norte, where she was born, she followed the swing of the dancers from É o Tchan, a group from Bahia. Granddaughter of native indians and africans, she even considered participating in a contest to chose the group's new dancer - won by Scheila Caravalho - but her extremelly thin body didn't fit the right standards. "I didn't have a big rear", she recalls.

The dream of dancing in tiny little clothes around the country ended when she was 14, after watching Naomi Campbell in a runway show on tv. "I was fascinated and decided to become a model at that moment", she says.

Now, at the age of 25, 175cm, 54kg, with generous curves, full lips and long black hair inherited from her indian grandmother, Suyane is the new promisse of brazilian top models. With a carreer of only 3 months she is the cover of April's edition of ID magazine, a bible of british fashion and has been recently photographed in Rio for the italian Vogue. "She simbolizes the Brazilian mixture of races among the blondes in the bussiness", says Carlos Miéle, who hired her for the M. Officer campaign. "I knew she would become a top model", says her stepfather José da Silva Ribeiro.

At São Paulo Fashion Week, where she fell into tears: "My dream has come true". The pictures for Miele's catalog where her first big work as a model. Before that she would only be hired by small stores in her city of birth. It wasn't easy to reach São Paulo's glamour.

Her mother, Antônia Moreira, a nurse, had to save money for her daughter's 15th birthday. "I got a model course as a gift", tells the model, who grew up surrounded by stuffed animals annd only learned how to read and write at the age of 9, when she started to go to school. "I'm the youngest child, my mother had to work and I had to look after my brothers". "At school, I was very different from the other girls and they would make up funny nicknames because I was too thin".

Working as a model in Juazeiro, she didn't earn much money. "I didn't care much about the payment, I enjoyed being watched on the catwalk". In order to help her family (she has four siblings) and continue her model course, she worked as a receptionist in cars and shoes fairs. She earned from 75 to 100 dollars a week. "And compliments from many men", she adds. At home she invited her friends for session of makeup and photos. She charged 2.50 dollars for each image.

When she became 17, she was invited for a small runway show in Juazeiro. The best model would be given red leather pants as a prize. "I told my mother that would be my last work in fashion". But she caught the attention of a model hunter who was in town. She won the leather pants and a participation at the Supermodel of the World contest, from Ford agency. She came in 4th, among 52 thousand candidates.
